UNMARKED GRAVES AND DAMAGED HEAD STONES

Preserving a family's history and preserving records is often left to a head stone on a grave.  Today, many family cemeteries are left unkempt and vandalized.  Many graves from the earlier times where not given a head stone or the head stone has been destroyed.

A fund has been established to reclaim these cemeteries, the graves and plots of land.  For example: In Chattooga County, Georgia the Johnson Cemetery was left to be retaken by nature for many years.  Johnnie Lewis took upon herself to obtain the labor force and equipment to clear the cemetery and put it back into condition with a permanent plaque with the name of the cemetery and many of the head stones that had been covered up were cleaned and remarked.

In White County, Georgia the graves of Starling T. Johnson and his wife Harriet E. Hughes graves were unmarked.  Our cemetery fund placed a head stone on the grave.  In Escambia County, Alabama the grave of Calvin Caraway McGugin and his wife Martha Jane Steel, unmarked, the cemetery fund obtained a head stone for their graves.  Since 1980 when the fund was created, there have been sixty two head stones purchased and placed on unmarked graves.

These are just a couple of the things that has been accomplished among many.  It may not seem to some to be a worthwhile endeavor.   But, to us it is important because the history of our people is important to pass onto future generations.  Therefore, keeping ancestor evidence is important.   The fact that a youngster can visit a cemetery and see the grave of his g-g-grandfather and mother with a well marked, cared for stone is a monument to that youngster's existence and worthiness.

You are invited to make a donation to this fund.   If you have a project that you feel is important, bring it to our attention and we will work with you to see what can be done.  However, the determination of which projects to do and what resources can be put forth must be left to the fund.   Resources are limited and the oldest are served first.   Rev. War Soldiers are given the highest priority, then other veterans, then based on historical significance, etc..

We hope you will join us in our efforts to preserve our family history.
